Markus Gneist has always enjoyed leaving his comfort zone and learning new things.

He is not put off by change and unfamiliar paths - on the contrary, they motivate him. However, the path to success was not always easy. Without a-levels he began his educational path with the university entrance qualification examination at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences (formerly FH Burgenland), which he successfully completed alongside his full-time job.

The step back into learning after several years in the world of work was not easy, but with the support of his partner, family and friends, he mastered this new beginning. He particularly appreciated the combination of business, technology and science during his studies, which enabled him to build up a broad specialised knowledge. The deepening of his hard and soft skills was also a significant benefit for him.

After completing his bachelor's degree in energy and environmental management, he started his career at STRABAG, where he has now been working for over 17 years, during which time he has expanded his expertise with an extra-occupational master's degree in building technology and management. From project manager to various management roles, he worked his way up to the position of level 2 expert and authorised signatory. What he particularly appreciates about his work is that he can put his extensive knowledge from his training and studies directly into practice:

"I can combine and implement everything I have learnt in my teaching profession and in my studies."

Markus Gneist, graduate of Burgenland University of Applied Sciences

Sustainability and the conscious use of natural resources are particularly close to his heart. In his current role, he can actively contribute his own ideas and develop and implement sustainable projects worldwide. His work ranges from residential construction to hospitals and hotels to state-of-the-art data centres. Each project brings new challenges that often require creative solutions. Particularly exciting is his current project on the energy assessment of buildings and the decarbonisation of heat supply, for which he and his team have developed a programme that enables the rapid assessment of existing buildings and plans.

His thirst for knowledge continues to drive him to this day. It is and remains important to him to leave his comfort zone and learn new things.

He therefore gives young people the following advice:

"You can achieve a lot with dedication and commitment!"

Markus Gneist, graduate of Burgenland University of Applied Sciences
