Expert for financial and economic crises
He began his professional career in the telecommunications sector at Deutsche Telekom AG, specialising in finance and controlling. In the course of his move to the energy sector, he also gained part-time academic experience at the Free University of Berlin in the field of economic policy. The latter laid the foundation for the continuation of his academic career: in 2018, he applied for the PhD programme in International Economic Relations and Management at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, which ultimately led to the successful defence of his dissertation topic in October 2021. Sebastian Zemla sees a special feature of the programme in its specific organisational form, which makes it possible for working people to participate.

All components of a modern doctoral programme are covered before the dissertation is written. Starting with the examinations, the submission of seminar papers, participation in scientific conferences and the publication of scientific articles. There is no lack of quality.

Crisis prevention measures
In his dissertation, which was supervised by the partner university Juraj Dobrila in Pula due to his Croatian origin and the thematic focus, he dealt intensively with financial and economic crises. Here he focussed on crisis prevention and the search for repetitive patterns with reference to economic indicators. The intention was to develop a prevention catalogue in order to better position oneself against crises in the future. Zemla's dissertation topic received particular attention due to current events, which meant that he could not avoid integrating the current corona crisis into his study as a follow-up.
The Covid-19 crisis forced me to adjust my previous dissertation topic and include a new crisis in the subject of my research. At the same time, I took advantage of the circumstances of this crisis, primarily through favourable developments in relation to digitalisation and mobile work. Opportunities must also be gained from every crisis.
Sebastian Zemla, graduate of the FH Burgenland
A fundamental reversal of the low interest rate policy, the sensitisation of government debt discipline and the limitation of inflation rates formed a further conglomerate of findings in the course of the investigation. The catalogue of preventive measures is rounded off by the topic of reviewing foreign trade dependencies. "In this context, the coronavirus crisis has truly shown the problems that rampant offshore activities can lead to." And the PhD graduate also sees the current energy crisis as confirmation of his findings: It illustrates more than ever the dilemma in which a national economy finds itself when it becomes overly dependent on cross-border procurement of energy sources.
