I like taking on complex challenges

Tomas Kienzl has worked his way up from trainee to Managing Director of HTPG - Haustechnik Planungsgesellschaft within ten years, completing two degrees along the way, a third almost finished.

He realised that he was interested in technology during his A-levels in physics, where he learned about semiconductors and photovoltaics. He studied Urban Renewable Energy Technologies at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien and completed his compulsory internship at HTPG. He began in the traditional way, printing and folding plans and compiling folders. However, these activities were enough to fully ignite his passion for building technology.

Building technology fascinated me and I quickly realised that I also had quite some talent for it. I enjoyed the interesting projects. It was clear that there was only one place in Austria to continue my studies and that was the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland in Pinkafeld.

Tomas Kienzl, graduate of the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences

He started the part-time Master's degree programme in Building Technology and Facility Management. "The programme was great and I was particularly impressed by its practical relevance. I was able to apply the theoretical knowledge I gained at the UAS straight away at work."

Professionally, he went from folding plans to drawing and quite quickly into project management. He became an authorised signatory in 2023 and Managing Director in 2025. The company specialises in projects in the healthcare sector with the claim of nearly zero energy hospitals.

The crises of recent years have given us a lot of tailwind for our projects. The willingness of clients to move in the direction of geothermal energy and sustainable energy systems has increased significantly.

Thomas Kienzl, Managing Director of HTPG - Haustechnik Planungsgesellschaft

His latest project is the rehabilitation centre currently under construction in Vienna, which will be heated almost entirely by geothermal energy using over 300 deep geothermal probes - on an area of almost 60,000 m2. He is currently completing an MBA in Leadership and Management at Danube University Krems.

What excites Tomas Kienzl about his job? "I enjoy two aspects the most: Firstly, solving complex technical challenges where I can devote myself fully to the technology. The other is the interpersonal aspect. It's incredibly rewarding to achieve goals and celebrate successes together with customers and business partners."
