Technology studies - Challenge accepted
"A technology degree programme is just a technology degree programme"explains Werner Stutterecker when asked why his bachelor's degree programme in Building Technology and Building Automation cannot shake off the image of being difficult. Subjects such as thermodynamics or measurement technology simply have to be "studied"."Despite didactically well-structured attendance and distance learning phases, it is important for students to actively learn the content of the technical subjects," says Stutterecker.

What is important is an understanding of the subject matter, which must become second nature to the students, as they say, and this requires an active engagement with the respective subject area.

Challenge accepted and completed
"The Bachelor's degree programme in GTA is certainly a challenge that demands a high degree of discipline, perseverance and ambition from all students. However, the framework conditions provided by the University of Applied Sciences and the close cohesion among the students enable each and every one of them to master this challenge," says Elena Treiber. She has completed the degree programme. It was particularly difficult for her to start the programme as she had not previously attended a technical school. "However, thanks to a coordinated programme at the UAS for lateral entrants, it is possible for everyone to make a successful start to a technical degree course."

Since October 2019, Elena has been working in Berlin on the "Neue Spreespeicher" construction project at Porr Design and Engineering in the TGA construction management department, where she is part of the management of a 46 million euro project. "Looking back, I can say that the degree programme was an ideal basis for my future career and I wouldn't want to have missed it from a personal development perspective." She is currently studying for a Master's degree in Building Technology and Facility Management at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

Technology - a solid foundation for the professional challenges of tomorrow
Christian Heschl is convinced that well-trained technicians are particularly in demand in the age of digital change. He heads the Master's degree programme in Building Technology and Facility Management, where Elena is now studying. "Employees with a sound technical education are essential both for the development of new system solutions and for the realisation of innovative business models," says Heschl.
"Planning, construction and operating processes are currently being reorganised using digital, collaborative working methods. In addition, new system solutions with high overall energy efficiency are required at European level. This opens up completely new development potential along the entire value chain of a building."

The solid training of our graduates enables them to develop the solutions of tomorrow and thus actively shape the industry.

No coffee brewing on the timetable
Christian Büll also emphasises this approach. He heads the Department of Information Technology and Information Management at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and the IT Infrastructure Management bachelor's degree programme.

We deal with absolute future topics relating to digitalisation and the Internet of Things.

"However, we don't look into a crystal ball, but provide our students with scientifically sound knowledge and the practical tools of the trade. It is precisely this combination that enables them to actively contribute to innovations and shape future developments."
However, all the experts agree that this requires commitment and a good dose of hard work.

George Matta is in his fifth semester of a Bachelor's degree in IT Infrastructure Management and is a research associate at the Centre for Cyber Physical Systems Security at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

Computer science is exciting, fast-moving and demands that you always stay on the ball. This can sometimes be very time-consuming. But that's also the beauty of our subject - constant learning and research, which results in great innovations.

Demanding, but with good job prospects
At the end of two or three intensive years, the commitment of the vast majority of graduates is rewarded with their dream job or a career leap. Nowadays, every second place at FH Burgenland is of a technical nature and numerous initiatives motivate young people to gain higher qualifications in technical fields. After all, the young experts of tomorrow will play a key role in the development of their industries.
