The barriers are often just in our own minds

Somehow, as a young girl, Theresa Kohl didn’t have a technical career on her radar. She simply lacked role models – something she’s now keen to actively address.

Looking back, she feels she should have attended a technical college (HTL). Nevertheless, her career path proves that a technical career is also possible with a secondary school diploma from a business-oriented college (HLW). She completed a master’s degree in Energy, Transport, and Environmental Management at the University of Applied Sciences Joanneum. Through her work in project and innovation management at the Styrian Energy Agency, the desire arose to specialise in building technology.

The master’s programme in Building Technology and Facility Management at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland provides the perfect opportunity to do so.

Colleagues at work recommended the programme to me. It’s true that UAS Burgenland graduates form a community and a valuable network in the field of building technology.

Since 2022, she has been employed at DILT Analytics, and since April, she has been part of the management team there. DILT Analytics is a spin-off of Graz University of Technology, primarily focused on developing data-driven optimisation solutions for buildings and energy systems. “At the moment, we’re still closely involved in research, especially in software development. We aim to combine the fields of computer science/AI/algorithms with building technology and create software solutions, for instance, for automated fault detection in large building complexes. My main responsibility at DiLT is currently product and business development, working closely with the challenges of future clients.”

She thoroughly enjoys her work: “It’s a very creative, varied, but also responsible job. Together with my team, I can shape the company's content and strategic direction, and thanks to our numerous research projects, I’m always close to innovative solutions,” she explains.

She’s also currently collaborating on a research project with Research Burgenland, a subsidiary of UAS Burgenland. The project focuses on combining individual comfort and well-being for building users with maximum energy efficiency of the buildings.

From her studies at UAS Burgenland, she particularly recalls the value of knowledge about building technology and the practical aspects of building operations.

She emphasises that a technical education wasn’t always easy for her.

I certainly had a degree of respect for the technical aspects. But I learned that the barriers are often just in our own minds. You build confidence step by step.
