Summer school: New opportunity for students learning Russian

The focus of the 2024 summer colleges was once again on having fun learning together.

A three-week summer college organised by UAS Burgenland took place in Tallinn (Estonia) for the first time in July. Other long-established destinations for the students were Krakow, Poděbrady, Budapest, Nitra and Pula. 170 students from Austria and abroad once again took advantage of this opportunity to learn languages this summer.

Eisenstadt, 26th of  July 2024 - Popular since 1999: the summer colleges to Central and Eastern Europe organised by the Department of Business at UAS Burgenland. The concept: gain new experiences for little money, make new friends, immerse yourself in new cultures and learn a new language.

This year, students from the Bachelor's degree programme in International Business Relations spent their summer colleges in Budapest (HU), Poděbrady (CZ), Pula (HR), Nitra (SK) and Krakow (PL) with students from other Austrian universities and from abroad. For the first time, an opportunity was created in Tallinn (EST) for  students of the Russian language who have been unable to travel to Russia since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Learning in tandem has proven its worth

The aim of the courses is to learn and improve language skills in language lessons on site, partly through tandem lessons. In addition, the students gain an insight into the business practice of the host country through company visits and lectures. Excursions to places of interest are also part of the programme. The programme is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, Aktion Austria - Hungary, Aktion Austria - Slovakia and Aktion Austria - Czech Republic. The participation fees for students are therefore particularly attractive.

As part of the Summer College programme, we had plenty of opportunities to explore new cultures, languages and environments - the definite highlight was the excursion to Narva, the centre of Estonia's Russian-speaking minority, where the river of the same name forms the border with Russia.

More than just a language course

Once again this year, the focus was on having fun learning together. A total of 34 students from UAS Burgenland and around 140 students from other universities in Austria and abroad took part in the programme. There was also an alternative to a stay abroad for around 100 part-time students. The University of Applied Sciences Burgenland organised the language intensive weeks on campus  over two weekends. The programme also included excursions to cultural highlights in the surrounding area. This year, the students travelled to neighbouring countries, namely Bratislava, Sopron and Brno.
